Captain America star Chris Evans admitted he was “embarrassed” of his country for electing Donald Trump as the next U.S. President over Hillary Clinton.

The Republican candidate was widely considered to be the underdog in the U.S. presidential race, but managed to secure victory after winning several key swing states from Clinton, including Ohio and Florida.

Evans, who plays Captain America in The Avengers movies and spin-offs, was one of the first to take to Twitter after news of the win was announced, slamming his country for voting Trump into the White House.

This is an embarrassing night for America. We’ve let a hatemonger lead our great nation. We’ve let a bully set our course. I’m devastated.

“This is an embarrassing night for America,” he wrote. “We’ve let a hatemonger lead our great nation. We’ve let a bully set our course. I’m devastated.”

Ted and Family Guy comedian Seth MacFarlane failed to see any funny side of the election result, tweeting: “I truly cannot visualize the rambling, incoherent creature I saw at the debates now addressing the nation from the Oval Office.”

He later added: “Some didn’t like Bush. Some didn’t like Obama. But this is different. Forget dislike. Many are genuinely fearful now. This is new.”

Former One Tree Hill star Sophia Bush pleaded with the American population not to despair following Trump’s win, writing: “I still believe in us. Despite this evident, great divide. It’s time to come together. Hear each other. Not give up, cry, or gloat. Unite.”

But I Love You, Man actress Rashida Jones was less optimistic, tweeting: “I want to quit life.”

Ex Charmed star Holly Marie Combs was in a state of shock over the result, telling her followers: “I do not recognize this world we live in. And I do not accept it. I do not. Nope. And nope.”

Others commented on Trump’s reportedly sexist, misogynistic and racist past during the campaign, with Pretty Little Liars hunk Keegan Allen writing: “America just elected a man who said to ‘grab em by the p***y’ over the first female president. This is really sad.”

Meanwhile, Nashville star Connie Britton wrote, “Dear Muslim, Mexican, immigrant, refugee, handicapped, black, gay, female humans beings, & also dear Earth…you are not forgotten. Promise,” while 30 Rock’s Will Arnett tweeted, “How do we explain this to future generations of women? And minorities?#weshouldbeashamedofourselves.”

CONGRATULATIONS PRESIDENT TRUMP! @realDonaldTrump against all odds ..against the establishment and even against most from the GOP..U did it!

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) November 9, 2016

Kirstie Alley was one of the few famous faces backing Trump, and tweeted: “CONGRATULATIONS PRESIDENT TRUMP! @realDonaldTrump against all odds ..against the establishment and even against most from the GOP..U did it!”

Steven Seagal added: “Congratulations @realDonaldTrump for your stunning victory over your opponent! Looking forward to making AMERICA great again!”
