One of the few fun parts of tax season is learning you have a refund coming after a year of paying federal and state governments. While some use this “extra” cash for vacations or other treats, single mom Christina Knaack is using it to pay her rent.

The South Carolina mother of two took to Facebook on February 22 to share a photo of her refund check, along with a caption detailing what she planned to do with it.

“I got back $5,600 on my taxes. Instead of buying my kids the latest Jordans or fancy electronics I paid my rent for the YEAR. I’m a single mom and I do it all buy myself on a minimum wage job. I kno (sic) that a roof over my kids head is what’s important,” she began.

Christina Knaack continued, “My kids don’t want for anything because my priorities are straight. And this also means I will have that extra 450 a month to do things with my kids.”

The post went viral almost immediately, garnering 200,000 reactions, over 88,000 shares, and nearly 25,000 comments in less than 24 hours.

Many commenters praised Knaack’s actions, such as Facebook user Mesha Edwards who wrote, “Been a single mother for over 13yrs and I’m completely proud of you!!! God bless you & your beautiful babies!”

However, others were less than complimentary with some questioning if that amount could really cover a year’s worth of rent, deriding Knaack for not investing the money, or questioning why she put the information on Facebook at all.

Your Daily Dish spoke to Christina Knaack about the post, and it’s viral success. She explained to us that sharing the information in the first place came from her wanting “…friends and family to kno (sic) my accomplishments and figured if they wanted to share it they could.”

Knaack also spoke about the huge reaction the post received, telling us, “I just wanted to reach out and let people know it is possible to survive and just wanted people to be smart about income tax money. I never thought it would go viral lol.”

And a reminder, please remember that the tax deadline in 2017 is April 18.
