When people come together, they can do amazing things – especially when animals are involved.

Shay is a two-year-old chocolate labrador mix in Menifee County, Kentucky. Last month, Shay was struck by a vehicle. Veterinarians at Menifee County Animal Shelter had to amputate one leg immediately, but days later discovered the other leg too had broken and was infected. The decision had to be made: Either euthanize Shay, or amputate the other leg. They choose amputation.

But now with only two back legs, mobility for Shay is limited. So, caretakers at the animal shelter sought out a custom-made wheelchair for Shay and turned to the public to help raise the money.

WVLT in Knoxville reported that when the call went out, the donations quickly came in.

“They needed $1,300 and raised that in a matter of hours after our story aired. The doggie wheelchair will be specially designed by a company out of Massachusetts,” according to the report.

“Though there would be some limitations, the wheelchair would allow Shay to interact with people and other animals on a fairly normal basis,” reported Joe Ducey with WLEX.

The animal shelter believes the wheelchair will return a sense of normalcy to Shay’s life – and her new owners, whomever they may be, as the shelter is looking for a new loving home for Shay.

“A wonderful dog. She’s just a, ya know, just a great dog,” said Diane McGuire, a worker at the animal shelter.

We have a feeling it won’t take long for this loving pup to find a new forever home.
