Mosquitoes are probably the most annoying part of the summer and sometimes bug spray just doesn’t make the cut.

However, this new homemade remedy will help you get rid of pesky mosquitoes naturally so you can enjoy your backyard. The repellent is made of all-natural ingredients and is super quick and easy to make.

To create this homemade mosquito repellent you will need:

  • Lemon Eucalyptus Oil
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Witch Hazel

First, add 30 drops of the lemon eucalyptus oil into a measuring cup. The oil contains an active ingredient called menthoglycol, which is just as effective as deet, but without the bad side effects. Next, add one teaspoon of the vanilla extract. The extract is not necessary to the concoction, but it makes the repellent much more effective and also adds a nice smell! Then add four ounces of witch hazel to complete the mixture. If you cannot find witch hazel, rubbing alcohol, vodka, or cooking oil can be used as a substitute. Once all of the ingredients are together, mix it up until the consistency is smooth. It should look like a “thin gravy” color when finished.

To transfer the mixture into a spray bottle, use a small funnel or create your own with a small piece of tin foil and wrap it into shape.

Most of the ingredients for the repellent can be found in the natural food isle at your local grocery store. Citronella and lemongrass also work as natural remedies, however they only last for about a half hour. This homemade remedy should last for about four to six hours.
