One Direction surprised fans Tuesday morning by dropping a new and super emotional music video for their single “History.”
The montage style video is a touching tribute to the group’s fans and gives off a see-you-later vibe now that the band is officially on hiatus. The end of the video confirms the hiatus in an unofficial way with the four band members – Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson – waving and walking off in separate directions.
The touching video shows footage of the band highlighting moments from their start on The X Factor U.K. to their final performance together during The X Factor finale. The video also shows some never-before-seen footage of the guys hanging out together on and off stage, even including clips of Zayn Malik despite his departure from the group.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Payne explained that he had the original idea for the music video.
“It’s really great because obviously that song is mainly about the fans and what they’ve done; I think it was important that they were a part of it, to close the album,” Payne shared.
Together with the help of the fans, Horan and One Direction writer-producer Julian Bunetta were able to make the vision happen.
Even though the video for “History” acts as a goodbye, the band is confident they will be back after some much needed rest.
“Five years, five albums, four tours … I’m sure it appears alarming when we say we’re going on a break, but in reality, it’s such a normal thing. If you look at other bands and other artists, they [go on breaks] all the time. It really isn’t as big and dramatic as it’s been made out, but our intention and our love is for the band and that’s always going to be the case,” shared Tomlinson with EW.
Check out the video below and be sure to get the tissues ready. It’s a tearjerker!!
