This Pizza Deliveryman Went Out of His Way to Save a Lost Dog While Out on a Delivery

During a routine pizza delivery run, one local deliveryman found himself making an unexpected stop.

24-year-old Steven Donovan is an avid photographer and spends most of his time working in national parks. On the side, he works part-time at Papa John’s to help bring in some extra cash. On Donovan’s latest delivery, he stumbled upon a lost dog that was trying to dodge cars on the road.

“I thought at first he was a little puppy black lab, but as I got closer, I saw he was just a really old cute dog with gray on his face,” Donovan told BuzzFeed News. “I was like, ‘You definitely should not be running around out here.’”

Donovan then picked up the dog named Snickers and took him on his delivery route.

“I told the people ‘Sorry I’m a little late, I have this dog in the car, I just found him across the road,’” Donovan told BuzzFeed News. “They thought that was really cool and they weren’t upset at all.”

Luckily, Snickers was wearing a collar and Donovan was able to recognize the address. It was a little out of the way from his delivery route, but the 24-year-old was determined to bring Snickers home.

“I knew I might get in trouble with my boss if they saw I went way off route, and the address that was on his collar was like two-and-a-half miles away on the other side of town,” Donovan said to BuzzFeed News. “It was not on my route at all. But I took him with me to the delivery that I was in the middle of.”

He continued, “I think it was probably against company rules to have a dog in the car with the pizzas and stuff, but super sweet dog, he didn’t try to eat the pizzas or anything.”

As Donovan drove into Snickers neighborhood, the dog immediately recognized the area and started to get very excited.

“He perked up and noticed this was his neighborhood, and he was wagging his tail and getting all excited,” Donovan told The Dodo.

However, there was a bit of confusion when Donovan arrived at the address. Apparently, Snickers’ owner had recently moved and no longer lived at the address on the tag. Luckily, a neighbor was still in touch with the dog’s owner and volunteered to get the dog back home.

“I really wanted to see the reaction of the owner, and I didn’t get to see that so it’s a little bit of a bummer,” Donovan told BuzzFeed News. “But it’s probably cool for him to just know this anonymous pizza guy delivered his dog back.”

This isn’t the first time Donovan interrupted a pizza delivery to save a dog.

“This happens all the time. If I see a dog running, I’ll slam on the brakes, get out of the car, and chase after it,” Donovan told BuzzFeed News. “And work isn’t going to stop that.”
