“Just because I’m homeless, it doesn’t mean that I haven’t got a heart.” Those are the words of “Steve,” who’s captured the respect and admiration of people everywhere after the homeless Manchester man was seen helping victims of the terrorist attack in England on Monday night.

U.K.-based ITV News first interviewed Steve in the aftermath of the deadly bombing at an Ariana Grande concert that left 22 dead and another 59 injured. ITV News posted an interview with the homeless Manchester man to their Twitter account. Within hours, the interview had been retweeted and shared tens of thousands of times.

“I’d like to think someone would come and help me if I needed the help,” said Steve, who ITV News reported was sleeping near the Manchester Arena when the bomb went off. “It’s just instinct to go and help, if someone needed your help, and it was children and it was a lot of children with blood all over them and crying and screaming.”

Steve explained the devastation at the scene.

“We were having to pull nails out of their arms and a couple out of this little girl’s face.”

The response to Steve’s quick thinking and selfless act was immediate.

“Steve didn’t think twice about helping another human but I wonder how many times he’s received the same compassion. Can we please find this man to offer him a bed to sleep, food and clothes?” wrote one Twitter user. “I will personally pay for the stuff to help him out @itsnews?”

Shortly after that, someone had launched a JustGiving account for Steve. As of Tuesday, the account has raised nearly 1,900 pounds ($2,466).

One Twitter user wrote, “It’s often the people with the least that tend to offer the most. I hope this man receives the help and support that he deserves.”

Another user wrote, “What a legend! Has nothing, but gave everything to help those in need.”

Update: After Steve’s story went viral, David Sullivan, co-owner of West Ham United Football Club, took to social media to track down the hero. Eventually, Sullivan was put in contact with Steve and offered him six months free rent to finally give him the chance he needs to get back on his feet.

Please SHARE Steve’s amazing act of bravery and kindness with your friends to keep Manchester in your thoughts.
