Japanese Macaques Are the Coolest Monkeys Around
When you think of macaques, you probably picture those cheeky monkeys who steal cameras and food from tourists. They have a reputation as being devious thieves, but they’re also incredibly intelligent and adorable!
Japanese macaques, for instance, are the most northern-living, non-human primates in the world. Their thick fur allows them to handle temperatures as low as -4 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, their love for a hot bath also helps keep them warm! Snow monkeys even have snowball fights with each other.
They’re arguably the smartest species of monkeys. They learn easily and pass on new skills to other members of their group. Japanese macaques clean their food in water and use salt as a flavor enhancer. They also ride deer for transportation and entertainment just like people do with horses.
