For these dog owners, they likely weren’t green with envy when their pooch had her puppies. They were probably highly concerned for the health of one puppy in particular.
2-year-old Milly is a chocolate lab and recently gave birth to a litter of five puppies — four boys and one girl. The boy pups all came out normal colors, but the girl, Fifi, left them in shock — and a little bit scared. Fifi was born with green fur.
But doctors say a green puppy is actually more common than many people might realize.
A green puppy can occur when a light-haired dog is overexposed to a substance called biliverdin, which can be found in the placenta. Humans have biliverdin too, and is the reason why we sometimes see a greenish color around some bruises.
Fifi’s owners say the color is fading and Fifi’s natural brown coat is coming out, but it must have been quite a surprise when they first saw her.
And by the way, Fifi was named after Fiona, you may remember her was the ogre princess from Shrek. Clearly a fitting name for the dog.
